You may work together to discuss the issues, but you must write your own response. In 1-2 pages, what would a believer in the ethical system you studied say in response to Hardin (author of Lifeboat Ethics)? Write as a "believer" in your system. Where would there be agreement with Hardin? Disagreement? Explain your ethical viewpoint on Hardin's article clearly. Tomorrow, I'll cover the remaining 3 ethical systems: Science, Cynicism, and Kantian Duty. Wednesday, we will have the test on Ethical Systems. For each section of Lifeboat Ethics summarize (1-2 sentences only) the point the author is making. You may work together to garner the information, but you will turn in your own paper.
Fill in the worksheet to be sure each group covered the topic and for your use as a study guide for the test on Friday. Work on creating your presentations for the Ethical System your group has chosen. You must cover the material in your text AND go beyond to teach about the associated philosophers, and more in-depth on the theory.
Presentations begin Monday. For the remainder of the week: We will be dealing with Ch 4-16 in our text: Ethical Systems - Sign up in groups of three or four - Today: read the chapter for the system your group chose. - Focus on how you will teach this system to the class, the main philosopher and their philosophies (what are they, how do they differ, what do they add to the system) - Begin a Prezi, Google Presentation, PowerPoint or KeyNote presentation you will use next week during presentations. - Work on your Ethical Systems group presentation using your text and the class iPads. - See PDF below for specifics on what must be in your presentation next week. - Test questions are due on Friday by the end of the class. - Chart to make notes on other group's presentations is the second attached .doc below.
Life Boat EthicsYou are on a cruise (YAY!). The ship sank in stormy seas (bummer). You are in a lifeboat with 9 other people (10 total). There are seats for unto 20 people in the lifeboat. There are survival kits with supplies for 20 people. Each survival 'kit' has food, water and medical first aid supplies for one person for one week. There are 100 people in the water near enough to your boat that they can swim to you before they drown in the rough seas or the sharks get them (yes, there are sharks out there!). - Do you let anyone into your boat? Or do you keep all the supplies for those already on board? - How do you decide how many can come aboard? No matter what you do, 90 or more are going to die or swamp your boat! (then you all drown!) - How do you decide WHO can come aboard? No time for in-depth interviews here! - Do you keep everyone already in the boat IN the boat? Under what circumstances will you throw people already on board overboard? - How will you divvy up your supplies? Now that we've discussed and you've responded to the above questions, read the article below for block day. Finish the Metaphysical film and answer the questions (see previous days). Questions due at the beginning of class on Friday. For fun, Plato's "Cave" analogy (Book VII of "Republic") is attached. Today: A new ethical dilemma worksheet.
Yes, kids, we're going to "kill off" more people and you, once again, have to discuss whose life is "more valuable" than others. This time you get to use logic, ethics, and both partial and impartial thought. Write down your first, gut response. Then discuss as a class. Write down any cane of heart you'd have IF ANY, after hearing the reasoning of others. Do this for each dilemma. Answer the question at the end too! Turn in at the end of the period. The test WILL BE TOMORROW. Attached are the Ppts for each unit. Test material can come from the Ppts or my verbal lecture.

PurposeIn the Fall, we focus on the foundations of Philosophy and Logic, culminating with a project where you express your own Personal Ethical Code. In the Spring, we study ethical systems of thought and analyze their logic, ending with the development of your own nation, founded and run according to your ethical code.
