Today we'll finish the Epistemology lecture and begin watching THE TRUMAN SHOW as an example of epistemology in action and as an exemplum of the Cave Analogy. Students will answer the questions on page one of the attached worksheet. Due Tuesday
You may answer question #1 with the correct words for the objects and use bullet statements to do so. Question #2 requires some thought and effort on your part and must be completed using complete sentences and paragraphs, in essay, journal, or story format.
Discuss and analyze the Cave allegory and what each element means.
HW (due Wed for 30 pts, 500 words max length): Choose a situation that has been in the news, politics, popular media, etc, in the last three years that is similar to the Cave. Make the analogy between each element in the cave and your chosen example. Do not waste time repeating the Cave info, but DO include ALL the parts of the cave allegory in your analogy. - all info in the Ppt. is fair game for the test.
- Don't forget to turn in your "Cave Essay". What is true? How do you know? What is a justified truth belief? We discuss Ethos Pathos and Logos and the concept of Knowledge. Tomorrow we will continue our discussion on Plato's Cave allegory. Have fun with the ethical dilemma yesterday? Now that you've got an idea of the kind of thinking you'll need to do in this class, let's dive in! Today you'll read an excerpt from Plato's REPUBLIC (Book VII), the Allegory of the Cave (attached below) and discuss, in class, what Plato's explanation of education/enlightenment means. After, you'll write up your explanation of the symbols in the allegory, explaining each step of the process from the Cave (what does the Cave symbolize?) to becoming a Philosopher King. Due Thursday.
On our first day we'll BRIEFLY go over the Class Policy Plan (due, signed, by Friday 8/23). Today we get our texts and go over some important info. Please read the documents and "sign" the form below indicating you have read and understood the info. Have your parent/guardian of record do so in a separate submission. (due by WED 8/21/13) |
PurposeIn the Fall, we focus on the foundations of Philosophy and Logic, culminating with a project where you express your own Personal Ethical Code.
