Using your printed out copy of the Rifkin article, we will, together, ID the separate arguments Rifkin uses and discuss the content (Mark "C" on the right hand margin) and purpose (mark "P" on the left hand margin) of each argument. Then, we will go back over the article and ID if each argument uses Ethos, Logos, or Pathos (or a combo). Finally, we will research Rifkin's claims for validity and truthfulness. On block day, you will research animal rights and current usage. See attached document.
This week a Senior student will teach the class on two modern "ethical systems" of belief as part of his Senior Project.
We will continue with Ethos, Logos, Pathos and Fallacies after. - Finish Fallacies Ppt. - Read p1 in Logic text. - DO 1.1 (pp1-2) For each letter a-j, if there IS an argument, list the premise (P) and the conclusion (C). If it is NOT an argument, put NA. If it is not an argument, but IMPLIES one, put NA and then the implied premise and conclusion in parentheses (C and P) to the side. Do NOT peek at the answers at the bottom of p2!!! - Self correct (now you can look at the answers). Don't black out your wrong answers, but mark them as wrong (X on the letter of the problem) and write the correct answer. This lets me know how many understand premise/conclusion and if we need, as a class, to do more work on them or if we are ready to move on. -HW: READ the attached article: "A Change of Heart About Animals" and print out a copy to work with in class on Friday. Two Ppt lectures: Argumentation and Fallacies. Bring Logic text books (the soft cover / floppy one) on Wed. Test on Ethical Systems today. When done (early?) then use iPads (to introduce our next unit on Rhetoric and Argumentation) to read the "Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments", linked below. |
PurposeIn the Fall, we focus on the foundations of Philosophy and Logic, culminating with a project where you express your own Personal Ethical Code. In the Spring, we study ethical systems of thought and analyze their logic, ending with the development of your own nation, founded and run according to your ethical code.
