Tuesday: "Quotes of Quality": Choose five (5) quotes that exemplify "who you are". Cite the quote, the author, and write a brief statement explaining the importance of the quote to you. Thursday "Mission Transition" Parts I and II (handout). This will guide you in writing your Principles. Work on your mission statement (1-5 sentences) and Principles (2-5). We will deal with the Action Steps another day. Begin film that shows an ethical code and adhering to it: Chak de India Friday - Read the article. Discuss in class. This fictional character lives by an ethical code and sticks to it, even when it's not convenient, even when no one would know if he didn't. See if you can identify his code (in your head, what is his "mission statement", his "principles", and his "action steps") After reading, sum up (a ¶ or two) WHY he was important. What lesson WE can take from his example and apply to our own lives?
How to Hate : (this article is SATIRE, laden with irony and addresses a serious matter via sarcastic humor) Read the article and ID an real-world example of when/where/who utilizes this "step" or method of spreading hate. It's important you learn to "see" the way you and others are manipulated into hate-think mode. How to Think: This article addresses the failures of critical thinking that we fall into when we insist that our perspective is the only "right" way to think. Using the examples of hate-think you listed from the prior article, identify which failure in the critical think process allowed for the hate think? What is innate egocentrism (It's true because I've always believed it's true) OR.....? Watch the film Twelve Angry Men. ID 5 of the main arguments regarding the defendant's guilt/innocence (conclusions). What IS the evidence against him (premises)? Which arguments made in the jury room are legitimate arguments and which are fallacies? If fallacious, ID the fallacy employed. Due on block day. Have them read over Ch. 8 in their Logic books.
HW (to begin in class):
Due Monday. ID the Claim, Data, Warrant, Foundation/Backing, Counterclaim, and Rebuttal
- Watch video: "Conspiracy Theory: Did We Really Land on the Moon?" - Write down FIVE (5) of the claims (arguments) the video makes to "prove" we did NOT land on the moon. - Write (you may sum up as it will go by to fast to quote) the premises for each claim. - State the conclusion of each claim. After the video you will examine the structure of the five arguments you wrote down for truth, probability (high or low) and validity. You'll also ID if the argument is inductive or deductive. Note: you are NOT being asked to agree with the views in the video, only to analyze how well the video made its case. After this, you will read the following rebuttal article "debunking" the claims made in the video: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/debunking-myth-that-moon-landing-was-hoax-1457501 Is the rebuttal effective? Do any claims made in the video remain unaddressed/explained? From the two sources, do any points of debate remain? A "conspiracy theory" need not be a false or unproven argument. Sometimes questioning the "known facts" results in such theories proving true: Conspiracy Theories that Turn Out to be True HW: Find a currently debated conspiracy theory. List the claim and the premises upon which the claim is based. Evaluate the argument as we did with the moon landing theory. The first two days this week we will cover Ch1 (Monday) and Ch 2 (Tuesday) in our Logic books. Various exercises, both in the book and via hand outs, will help you understand basic logic and argument structure.
