Today you either brought your actual W2 and 1099 forms or I'll provide you with "dummy" copies from the Net to use in practice. Those with their actual forms may either "just practice" or actually use what we do today to get your tax return. All students under 18 who work should file their tax returns for a full refund of their CA State Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and their Federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) taxes withheld from their paycheques. Why? Because you cannot vote and to tax you is "taxation without representation". Thus you get all your state and federal taxes returned to you. I'll provide the EZ version of the forms and walk you through filling them out. Usually, it is the parents/guardians who teach and advise a near-adult regarding how to do taxes, make a household budget, manage a bank account, get a loan and figure the compound interest, etc.. This lesson is not to replace parental duty and advice but to make students aware of their rights, responsibilities, and duties as will be expected of them as adult citizens. Consider today's lesson as a "conversation starter" with your parents/guardians.
